Policy 2-003: President of the University; Policy 6-001: Academic Units and Academic Governance - Roles of Faculties, Committees, Councils, and the Academic Senate; and Policy 6-002: The Academic Senate and Senate Committees - Authority, Structure, Functions, and Procedures

Effective January 13, 2026, the university revised several policies to ensure that university regulations comply with state law that establishes responsibilities of institution of higher education presidents. These revision include changes to the following policies: Policy 2-003: The President of the University Policy 2-004: Organization of the University Policy 6-001: Academic Units and Academic Governance – Roles of Faculties, Committees, Councils, and Academic Senate Policy 6-002: The Academic Senate and Senate Committees – Authority, Structure, Functions, and Procedures In addition the university created a new rule -- Rule R6-001A: Creation, Significant Modification, and Discontinuance of the Academic Units of Free-standing Division, Department, School, College, and Library -- to document the existing process for creating or modifying academic units. The university also moved information about meetings of the faculty as a whole from Policy 6-001 into a new rule, Rule R6-001D: Meeting Procedures for the University Faculty as a Whole.

Policy 7-001: Research Misconduct Policy

Effective January 1, 2026, the university revised Policy 7-001: Research Misconduct Policy to comply with changes in federal regulations. The revised policy also addresses expectations for behavior follow completion of research misconduct proceeding, addresses retaliation, and create a standing committee for research misconduct proceedings.

Revisions to Policy 5-001 and 5-108 Related to Probationary Period and Transfer Staff Members

On November 13, 2025, the Board of Trustees approved changes to policies related to the probationary period for staff members and transfer of staff members. See Policy 5-001: Employee Definitions and Policy 5-108: Transfer of Benefits Eligible Staff Members. These changes do not apply to University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics Staff members. The changes will take effect on January 1, 2026.

Policy 1-022: Strategic Reinvestment

Effective November 13, 2025, the university created new policy Policy 1-022: Strategic Reinvestment. This policy is required by state law as part of the law requiring the university to create a Strategic Reinvestment Plan. This policy repeals automatically on June 30, 2028.
